Morning Tranquility - Whitetail Deer painted by wildlife artist Les C Kouba.
This scene was inspired by the early fall before hunting season. I was out in the early morning, bass fishing. We were working the shores very quietly, and all of a sudden the deer would silently step out of the woods, look around a bit, and then walk to the water’s edge to drink. I’ll always remember the peacefulness of it. I wanted to capture this. I painted the deer as a naturalist would, instead of from a hunter’s viewpoint. This painting is a favorite of mine. I like its loose, arty feeling-it really sings. Born: February 3, 1917, Hutchinson, Minnesota Died: September 13, 1998, Minneapolis, Minnesota Internationally known as one of the world’s foremost master painters of wildlife, Leslie ‘Les’ C. Kouba is recognized as the founder of the wildlife art revival in the 1970s, and as such, inspired many other wildlife artists. His deep understanding of wildlife stems from growing up on a Minnesota farm, which afforded him ample opportunity to observe and study wildlife in their natural habitat. Kouba said, “Because I actually hunted and fished, I developed an early understanding of all of the background skills necessary for my future career as a wildlife artist.”
